Bicycle Helmet & Lock Initiative

Bicycle safety and education is an integral part of the Champaign-Urbana Safe Routes to School Project’s (C-U SRTS) mission. C-U SRTS has a supply of bicycle locks and helmets that we would like to distribute to students in the community who need them but may not be able to purchase them on their own. We realize that teachers know their students best, and would know which students have need of this assistance. We also believe that the faculty and staff would know the best way to fairly distribute these supplies to their students. Therefore, we have created this application to give schools the opportunity to receive the bike locks and helmets.
Equipment: Applicants can request up to 15 helmets and 15 locks. The helmets come in a variety of sizes designed to fit children and youth and the locks will all be standard combination cable locks. |

- Applicants must provide contact information for the person who will be overseeing the helmet and lock distribution. All questions on the application must be completed within the space provided.
- The committee will work to create equitable distribution of helmets across the Champaign-Urbana community.
- To be considered for the Bicycle Helmet & Lock Initiative Award the application is to be filled out completely. C-U SRTS Program reserves the right to increase or decrease the amount of helmets awarded to each applicant based on the availability of supplies.
Criteria/Requirements for Applying:
- Helmets and locks should be distributed to children who are unable to secure helmets and/or locks due to lack of resources or other limitations.
- Schools should consider ways to identify and invite children in the community who would benefit most from receiving a helmet and lock through this initiative.
- Helmets and locks cannot be sold.
- Helmet and lock distribution must take place within 12 months after receiving the equipment.
